Job Description:
The City of St. Marys, Ohio, is currently looking to fill a vacancy for a Police Officer. NTN testing must be completed and scores sent to the City of St. Marys. PHQ must also be completed.  The City of St. Marys is currently offering continuous testing.  Applicants who pass all tests and submit the PHQ and Civil Service Application will be certified to an eligible list. Applicant must pass all individual tests, excluding any additional credits, as a prerequisite for further consideration for employment or appointment in the classification tested, and for certification to an eligible list.  The following additional credit will be given to each applicant as it applies to that applicant’s test if he or she passes all tests (without counting additional credit) as described above.  An applicant may receive any combination of the following credits up to an aggregate maximum of twenty percent (20%) of the total grade given in the examination to any applicant who files for the extra credit and qualifies. Any applicant for original appointment who is a resident of Ohio, who has completed service in the uniformed services as described in R.C. 124.23, who was honorably discharged or transferred to reserve duty with evidence of satisfactory service, and who otherwise meets the qualifications of that section, may file with the Commission a certificate of service or honorable discharge for extra credit for such service.  The Commission shall grant additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the total grade given in the examination to any applicant who files for the extra credit and qualifies, provided that he or she has first received a passing grade. An applicant in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the total grade given in the examination, provided the applicant files for such credit and qualifies and first receives a passing grade.  An applicant will only be entitled to one (1) of the credits described in this paragraph and the preceding paragraph. Any applicant for original appointment who possesses the Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification may file with the Commission proof of such certifications for extra credit in the amount of fifteen percent (15%). Applicants eligible for veterans credit on original appointment examination shall receive a priority in ranking over non-veterans who obtain an identical grade. Salary Information Starting Wage - No OPOTA Certification $23.46/hour OPOTA Certification $26.19/hour Step 1: $29.17/hour (upon completion of departmental training) Top wage: $33.50/hour Employees with an associate degree or higher in either law enforcement, police science, criminology, or criminal justice shall receive $1.05/hour additional compensation.  Newly hired employees are eligible once they successfully complete their training period. Contact Info: Sue Backs Personnel Director Email: sbacks@cityofstmarys.net City InfoThe City of St. Marys operates a full-time Police Department with sixteen full-time Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certified Officers, a full-time Police/Fire/EMS dispatch center with four Dispatchers, a Custodian of Records, and a Code Enforcement Officer. The department provides 24-hour coverage to our community and its visitors through various means of transportation.
Of the sixteen Officers, one Officer is assigned full-time as a School Resource Officer (SRO). The SRO not only provides safety for our students and staff, he and other Officers train our school and area businesses in safety in areas such as A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate). The SRO is a liaison between our school district and our police force. The Police Department has one full-time Detective who has achieved OPOTA certifications in Master Criminal Investigator and Master Evidence Technician. The Detective also serves as a Traffic Crash Reconstructionist. The Police Department believes in high quality training for all personnel. Several Officers have achieved the Master Criminal Investigator certification and three have attained the Master Evidence Technician certification to provide high quality and effective investigations. The department also has two firearms instructors, defensive tactics instructors, three hostage/crisis negotiators, and one Officer certified in computer and cell phone forensics to aid in criminal investigations. A German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia named "Mattis" is also a member of the department. Mattis is a dual purpose K-9 with certifications in narcotics detection, tracking, and building, area, and article searches. Mattis and his handler patrol our streets as well as conduct numerous demonstrations for community organizations.
