Job Description:
Job Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Ensure that the Judges, Court employees and general public visiting the Courthouse are safe
  • Monitor all people passing through magnetometer and search if appropriate
  • Scan all loose items, bags, purses, etc. each person has on their person through X-ray machine
  • Monitor/maintain logs of issued keys for the building
  • Arrest any person who is in violation of any law and/or ordinance
  • Complete periodic sweeps of building during business hours
  • Ensure building and offices within building are secured at end of business
  • Assist with check-in of Probation offenders and people attending Court when Court Receptionist/Probation Secretary not available
  • Provides direction and general information for people entering the building
  • Complete incident reports as required and cooperate with law enforcement investigations
  • Collects and preserves contraband from people who enter the Courtroom building and then surrender the property/evidence to law enforcement personnel if appropriate
  • Performs any/all related duties as required or requested by the Court
  • Process case paperwork from Court Hearings
  • Retrieve and return inmates to Court and Holding Cell
  • Enter information into LPD software system as required
  • Other duties as assigned. The Lima Municipal Court Judge’s Division retains the right to add, delete, or modify the duties of this position at any time
 
  • Clerical Skills/Expertise
  • Ability to safely handle a firearm
  • Ability to identify legal paperwork and understanding the dates/deadlines associated with different types of legal work
  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply Court and Bailiff Department policies and procedures
  • Ability to read and comprehend written material, including case entries and other court paperwork
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to effectively communicate with the public, staff and attorneys
  • Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner with diverse populations, including but not limited to judges, co-workers, and other departments/agencies, and customers (including attorneys, defendants, plaintiffs, and their families
  • Ability to listen to individuals to obtain information necessary to provide meaningful and accurate assistance
  • Ability to quickly assess situations and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain self-control under stressful conditions (a professional demeanor), including the ability to effectively communicate with upset, angry or frustrated individuals
  • Ability to maintain an even temper across situations and the ability to take verbal abuse
  • Ability to document work activities, work independently with minimal direction, prioritize work tasks and complete them in a logical order, manage time and meet deadlines under time pressures and stress
  • Ability to appropriately operate and use Court-issued safety equipment
  • Ability to maintain Court-issued safety equipment in good working order
  • Ability to operate a computer, including keyboarding skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive or confidential information
  • Ability to write neatly and legibly
  • Ability to speak clearly and listen carefully
  • Ability to operate office equipment
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Ability to work outside regular work hours when needed
Qualifications:
Education:
  • Graduation from High School or GED Certificate, required
  • Thirty (30) semester hours of course work through an accredited college or university toward a degree in business, criminal justice, or related field, preferred
  • Trained on all security equipment and features by the Ohio Supreme Court
Certification:
  • Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Program Certificate
  • Current firearms certification
  • Hiring contingent upon passing background check and clearance as Lima Police Department Auxiliary Officer
Availability:
  • Must be able and available to work during the department’s business hours on the days required
  • (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • May be required to occasionally work beyond these hours, and every effort will be made to provide advance notice of such
Experience:
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with the public, required
  • Experience in legal or court-related work, field work, and work involving upset or contentious citizens, preferred
Background:
  • May not have prior convictions for fraud, theft, or crimes involving violence or weapons, or other crimes that would adversely affect the Chief Security Officer’s ability to support the work and function of the department, or represent the Court in a fair, credible and professional manner
