Job Description:
SUMMARY: The person in this position assists the manager of the Mechanical Department in the supervision of employees and their safety. He or she is responsible for ensuring that the safety rules and procedures for Mechanical Department employees are followed explicitly. He or she manages the maintenance and repair of cars in order to meet FRA and AAR standards and provide quality service to customers or other departments of the company. RESPONSIBILITIES: •Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, the AAR, and the Federal Railroad Administration •Assist in maintaining employee safety records regarding scheduled safety-rule presentations, job briefings, and safety films; prepare schedules for these events •Perform periodic safety audits of employee work ethics, housekeeping, quality of work, and operating rules •Assign and monitor progress of work in shop to ensure directives to employees are being adhered to •Assist in maintaining car files to comply with FRA inspection rules, AAR rules, and G&W rules for record retention •Interface with manager on work schedules in order to assign employees their daily duties •Interface with Purchasing to ensure repair parts are available in a timely manner to meet production schedules; prepare requisitions for repair parts as necessary to minimize bad-order dwell time •Manage and monitor bad-order dwell time to reduce car hire and support online customers •Make decisions concerning correct repair-and-maintenance practices •Assist shop-craft employees in their assigned duties as required •Manage other projects and perform other duties as assigned REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE: •Knowledge of AAR interchange rules •Knowledge of AAR and FRA rules pertaining to car repair •Good computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel •Ability to manage and supervise hourly employees •Ability to understand oral or written instructions and execute them to achieve desired results •Ability to maintain good working relationships with other department heads and supervisors •At least four years of experience repairing railcars REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS: •High school diploma or GED; associate degree preferred •At least eighteen years of age •Valid driver’s license •Previous supervisory experience repairing railcars preferred This position is employed by the specific entity set forth in the job posting.
